Common Challenges in Small-Scale Solar

Understanding these issues in advance is exactly what makes the difference between a smooth installation and a frustrating one.

These are not reasons to avoid solar. They are situations that arise regularly and that an informed buyer is much better positioned to handle. Some are technical, some are contractual, and some are simply about setting realistic expectations. Each one is covered in depth within the training program.

Shading and Performance Loss

Shading is the most commonly underestimated factor in residential solar. Even partial shading on one panel in a string can reduce output from the entire string, not just the shaded panel. Trees that seem distant, neighboring buildings, chimneys, and dormer windows all cast shadows that move through the day and change seasonally.

A well-prepared buyer asks for a shading analysis before any quote is finalized. The training covers what this analysis should include, how to interpret it, and when microinverters or power optimizers are a more appropriate solution than a standard string inverter setup.

Ask any installer: "Can you show me a shading analysis for my specific roof?"

System Sizing Mismatches

Oversizing a system relative to actual consumption means a significant portion of production is exported to the grid at unfavorable net-billing rates. Undersizing means the economics take longer to work. Neither is automatically wrong, but both should be deliberate choices based on your actual consumption data, not an installer's default sizing.

Request that sizing is based on your actual electricity bills, not regional averages.

Grid Connection Delays

In Poland, grid connection requires approval from your local distribution system operator (DSO). This process takes time and is outside the installer's direct control. Delays of several weeks to a few months are not unusual. Your system may be physically installed but unable to operate in grid-connected mode while awaiting approval.

Ask your installer who handles DSO paperwork and what their typical connection timeline has been.

Contract and Warranty Gaps

Solar installation contracts vary widely in quality. Common gaps include vague warranty terms that don't specify who handles a claim, performance guarantees that are worded so broadly they're difficult to enforce, and payment schedules that front-load risk onto the buyer.

Panel manufacturers offer product warranties (covering defects) and performance warranties (covering output over time) separately. Installer workmanship warranties are separate again. Understanding the difference and knowing which documents to request is a core part of Module 5 in the training program.

Always request separate documentation for panel, inverter, and workmanship warranties before signing.

Unrealistic Payback Projections

Payback calculations are only as reliable as their assumptions. Electricity price projections, self-consumption ratios, and panel degradation rates all affect the outcome significantly. An optimistic assumption in each variable compounds into a very different picture than a conservative one.

Ask installers to show you their assumptions, not just their conclusions.

Roof Condition and Structural Suitability

Solar panels add load to a roof structure and require watertight penetrations for mounting hardware. A roof that needs repair or replacement within a few years creates a problem: removing and reinstalling panels is costly. Structural assessment should happen before installation, not after.

If your roof is more than fifteen years old, consider a structural assessment before committing to installation.

Installer Continuity and After-Sales Support

Solar systems require ongoing monitoring and occasional maintenance. Inverter failures, monitoring system issues, and panel faults all require a responsive installer. The Polish solar market has seen rapid growth and equally rapid consolidation. Companies that were active during the installation boom are not all still operating.

Asking about an installer's history, their service team structure, and how warranty claims are handled in practice is not pessimistic. It's due diligence. The training program includes specific questions for assessing installer stability and after-sales capacity.

Ask how long the company has been operating and how many installations they have currently under active monitoring.
